Nong Khai
Nong Khai was once considered to be the seventh best place in the world for senior citizens. Locating on a map as a long thin area along the Mekong River, it is a border town which serves as Thailand’s main gate to Laos. In the old days, peoples of the two countries commuted by boat. After the completion of the Friendship Bridge joining Nong Khai and Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, Nong Khai has become a major center of transport and trade with Laos. Despite being the busiest border point, the town of Nong Khai has the atmosphere of a typical local town of Thailand. Being located next to the Mekong, the atmosphere of the town is also relaxing and peaceful. Nong Khai has a lot to offer to visitors. It is renowned for traditional local food as well as foreign foods such as Vietnamese, Laotian and western foods.
